Honey Bees

HONEY BEES will only sting if they feel threatened, but generally go about their business gathering nectar and pollinating plants.

Did you know? Honey bees are essential for the pollination of flowers, fruits, and vegetables, which supports crop production in New York State and the rest of the United States of America.

“Honey bees play a vital role in New York State's agriculture economy. Each year, thousands of bee colonies are used throughout the state to pollinate more than $300 million worth of agricultural crops such as apples, grapes, and pumpkins. New York is home to more than 60,000 of the bee colonies used each year….” Source: https://agriculture.ny.gov/plant-industry/honey-bee-health

Honey bees are social creatures and colonize together. They commonly colonize in the hollows of trees, but can build nests in the spaces in buildings like in walls, attics, crawl spaces, etc.

How large can a Honey Bee colony get?  Very large. It can consist of a single queen, hundreds of male drones, and 20,000 to 80,000 female worker bees. PLUS each honey bee colony also consists of developing eggs, larvae and pupae. A Honey Bee colony can weigh several hundred pounds.

If you notice honey bees flying in and out of a building’s exterior crack or opening, you are probably seeing them entering their colony. WARNING: DO NOT plug or interfere with the opening. Contact WNY Bee Removal so the colony can be safely removed.

The honey bee population has declined in the past few years. Preserving honey bee health is a priority for WNY Bee Removal.

Certified Master Beekeepers on staff - Jim and Paul Busch - have successfully removed and relocated LIVE HONEY BEE colonies from homes, buildings, and structures since 2005. The relocation of the LIVE HONEY BEE colony is done far from your home.

Both Jim and Paul completed the Cornell University Master Beekeeper Program, an advanced training program for beekeepers. They studied under Professor Nicholas W. Calderone and Cornell's Dyce Lab for Honey Bee Studies.

All treatments are in strict compliance with all New York State’s Department of Agriculture and Markets, and Federal rules and regulations.

FAST FACTS: HONEY BEES

  • Honey bees measure about 0.591 inches (15 mm) long and are light brown in color. Honey bees are usually oval-shaped with golden-yellow colors and brown bands.

  • Honey bee stings: To remove a stinger, scrape the back of a knife or other straight-edged object like a bank card across the stinger. Do not use tweezers since it may squeeze the venom sac and increase the amount of venom released into the wound. Next wash the site thoroughly with soap and water.
